MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's men's tennis team dropped a hard-fought match on Saturday to No. 8 Pepperdine, falling to the Waves, 6-1, at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex. The Gaels had a strong day on the doubles courts with multiple chances to capture the point but were unable to convert, while sophomore Joakim Norstrom highlighted the day in singles play with a win on court five.
SMC falls to 4-15 this season and 0-5 in West Coast Conference play, while Pepperdine improves to 16-6 this season and a perfect 5-0 in WCC action.
In doubles play, the Gaels got a win on court three to open the day. Sherif Hamdy and Seif El Sherbini defeated Daniel Moss and Kento Tanaka-Tami, 8-3. After the Gaels dropped an 8-5 match on court five, the No. 1 duo of Steven Dawson-Roberts and Norstrom played well and had three match points to claim the doubles point but could not convert, dropping a 9-7 match to Jenson Turner and Sebastian Fanselow.
With the doubles point in hand, the Waves were too much for the Gaels in singles play and won matches on five-of-six courts. Highlighting the day for SMC was Norstrom on court five. Norstrom earned an exciting win over Pepperdine's David Sofaer 7-5, 6-4.
The Gaels will return to action on Monday, April 9 with a match against San Francisco at the Olympic Club at 1 p.m.
