For the fourth year in a year row, the championships will be hosted at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif. beginning on Wednesday, April 25 and with a champion being crowned on Saturday, April 28. Pepperdine earned the No. 1 seed in the championships after going a perfect 8-0 in conference play this season, while San Diego enters the weekend as the No. 3 seed.
With the No. 2 seed in hand, the Gaels received first and second round byes and will play in the semifinals on Friday, April 27 at 12:30 p.m. against No. 3 San Diego (11-9, 6-2 WCC).
No. 41 Saint Mary's enters the WCC Championships with a 14-6 overall record and a 7-1 mark in conference action. The Gaels' lone WCC loss of the season came as a 5-2 setback on the road to Pepperdine, and that loss is the only one for SMC in their last 10 matches. All six loses for the Gaels this season were to top-35 teams, while Saint Mary's also upset a pair of top 30 teams in No. 25 Oklahoma and No. 29 Washington.
No. 86 Jenny Jullien continues to lead the Gaels this season with a 16-3 singles record this spring, while No. 105 Catherine Isip has gone 10-10 this season playing primarily at the difficult No. 1 spot. Senior Anna Chkhikvishvili has been strong for Saint Mary's all season with a 15-4 record, including going 8-0 in conference play and winning her last 10 singles matches.
The Gaels finished third in last year's WCC Championships after falling to No. 2-seed Pepperdine in the semifinals, but earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Saint Mary's won the program's first ever WCC Championship in 2010 after defeating the Waves 4-1.
Should Saint Mary's earn the semifinal victory on Friday, they will play in the championship match on Saturday, April 28 at 12:30 p.m.
