WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — In the opening round of the 2017 NCAA Midwest Regional at Purdue's Kampen Course, Saint Mary's grinded its way to an opening day 6-over finish, just two strokes back of the top-5 in the leaderboard.

“I thought it was a bit up and down," said Saint Mary's head coach Scott Hardy. "We started off pretty good, we struggled making the turn, we made a few birdies to get back and then we kind of had a rough finish.

Overall, it was pretty good.  We need to get a little more of a team effort and have four good scores. Other than that, it was a pretty good day.”

SMC sits in eighth place while No. 3 seed UNLV is atop the scoreboard with a 1-under 287 finish. Illinois and New Mexico are tied for second at even-par, while South Carolina overcame a slow start to finish at 3-over and sit in fourth place.

The No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region, Florida is tied for fifth with Auburn and the Boilermakers.

The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals. Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Northern Illinois University is the host institution for the 2017 championships.

The Gaels will tee off the 10th tee tomorrow at 8 a.m. ET with Purdue and Augusta.

Pavan Sagoo led the way for the Gaels with an opening round 71. The third year player would birdie his opening hole, bogey the tough 12th, then score nine straight pars.

Sagoo birdied the 4th and 6th to move to 2-under par at one point. The junior bogeyed the tough 9th for the 1-under par finish.

“I played solid throughout, but I didn't have my best regarding ball-striking, but such is golf," said Sagoo. "You will not have it all the time. I didn't hit many fairways or greens. I just chipped well and holed some putts. Just kept the round going and kept it steady today.”

Senior Hunter Rappleye played some of his best golf a couple weeks back at the WCC Championships, and continued that strong play into today's first round. The Sacramento native displayed steady golf all day long with an opening round 72. Rappleye birdied the 10th, his first hole of the round.

The senior carded an even-par 36 in his opening nine holes, and scored a birdie on the par 4 1st.

Junior Connor Blick is in his third NCAA Regional appearance, and used his experience en route to a 1-over round. Blick started the day with a bogey on the 12th, but bounced right back with birdies on 13 and 15 to move to 1-under. The junior would go on to bogey the tough par 3 17th to finish his opening nine holes at even.

Blick would card six pars, one birdie and two bogeys in his last nine holes. He would score a birdie on the 406-yard par 4 8th, but finish his round with a bogey for an opening round 73.

In his first career NCAA Regional, Roman Aragon started off strong, but faded later in the round. The junior scored 1-under through his opening five holes, but carded three straight bogeys on 16, 17 and 18. Aragon would get one back on the par 4 1st, but finished the first round with a 79.

The top player for the Gaels, Perry Cohen struggled to an opening round 78. The junior would shoot 5-over in his opening nine holes, but rebounded nicely with birdies on holes 4 and 8. The par 4 9th continued to get the best of the Gaels, as Cohen would double bogey the hole.
