SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Mickey McConnell scored 27 points, including the game-winning 10-footer, to give 24th-ranked Saint Mary's (ESPN/USA Today) a 73-71 victory over Gonzaga -- its first win in Spokane since 1995.
McConnell scored 10 of the final 11 points for Saint Mary's (18-3, 6-0 West Coast Conference). He was 10 of 17 shooting, including 4 of 5 from 3-point range.
With the win, the Gaels remain in first place in the WCC, one game ahead of second-place San Francisco. Gonzaga fell to a tie for fourth-place in the league with fellow Pacific Northwest rival Portland.
Saint Mary's handed Gonzaga its first three-game WCC losing streak since the 1997 season. It's the second home loss for Gonzaga this season, in a building where it has won 85 of 91 games.
The Gaels return to WCC action Saturday when they travel to Portland, Ore. for a 4 p.m. tipoff at Portland. The game will be televised live by ESPNU. In addition, live audio, statistics and chat coverage will be available on SMCGaels.com and a radio broadcast with Mike Bouve will air on KFRC 1550 AM.
Saint Mary's at Gonzaga
NOTEWORTHY: The win at Gonzaga is the first for Saint Mary's over the Bulldogs in Spokane since 1995 ... Mickey McConnell's 27 points was just one point shy of his career-high. The Mesa, Ariz. native scored 28 against Mississippi State earlier this season ... The largest lead by Saint Mary's in the game was a six-point margin witht 13:38 left ... Gonzaga's largest lead was a nine-point span early in the game ... Junior Rob Jones registered his sixth double-double of the season with 15 points and a career-high-tying 13 rebounds. He grabbed 13 boards against San Diego last week ... Clint Steindl did not have a strong game statistically, but he did have a key block and a steal late in the game and his defense down the stretch was important to the win ... Saint Mary's entered the game with a streak of 45-straight games in which they have come away with a win after leading at the half, dating back to a game at Gonzaga in 2009 ... Mickey McConnell and Matthew Dellavedova each played all 40 minutes in the game ... McConnell's 10 field goals and 17 attempts were both career highs.
