DENVER, Colo. - The Saint Mary's lacrosse team played a strong first half but Marist used a 6-1 run to begin the second half as the Red Foxes defeated SMC 13-12 on Sunday afternoon on the Denver campus.
With the loss, Saint Mary's drops to 1-5 while Marist improves to 1-5.
Rachel Minarovich led SMC with three goals while Caroline Mahony, Amanda Cross and Mariah Walk scored two goals apiece.
Saint Mary's scored the first four goals of the game, including two by Mahony and one from Walk and Jaclyn Biggers. The Gaels would later get a score from Cross to go up 5-2. After Marist cameback within 5-4, Minarovich and Walk had back-to-back goals to go up by three.
Cross and Minarovich each scored with under a minute left in the half to give the Gaels a 9-6 halftime lead.
In the second half, Marist scored six of the first seven goals to take a 12-10 lead with 7:37 remaining. Juliet Munroe cut the deficit down to 12-11 with 5:43 remaining, but Marist scored with 3:43 left to go up 13-11. The Gaels scored with one second left to pull within 13-12 on Anna Turpit's goal, but time ran out on a potential comeback.
Saint Mary's is back in action on Monday when it takes on Quinnipiac in Denver. The match-up will begin at 3:00 p.m. (PT) on the Denver campus.
