MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's lacrosse team earned its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win of the year, defeating Fresno State 20-6 on Wednesday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium. The Gaels outshot the Bulldogs 44-20 and cruised to the win as four Gaels scored at least three goals.
"I am proud of the way our team executed all over the field today," said head coach Lauren Uhr. "We showed a tremendous effort off the draw and this directly correlated to our win this afternoon."
With the win, Saint Mary's improves to 3-10, 1-5 MPSF while Fresno State drops to 2-10, 0-6 MPSF.
Mariah Walk led the Gaels with five goals, while Amanda Cross scored four times. Rachel Minarovich and Juliet Munroe scored three goals apiece. Caroline Mahony, Krista Morgan, Allie DeBruhl, Olivia Angulo and Anna Turpit also scored for the Gaels.
Minarovich also added two assists while Kathleen Worsdale was back in goal for SMC as the goalkeeper saved eight shots in the victory.
Of the 44 shots taken by the Gaels, Walk fired off eight shots while Cross took seven shots. Minarovich had a game-high 11 draw controls while Jillian Chong had a team-high four ground balls.
The Gaels entered the game as the NCAA leader in caused turnovers, but only caused four turnovers against the Bulldogs, about seven short of SMC's average.
Saint Mary's scored early and often in taking a 7-0 lead at the 15:29 mark in the first half after Minarovich scored on a pass from Mahony. Munroe scored for the Gaels before halftime and SMC took a 10-2 lead at the break.
In the second half, Fresno State scored the first four goals of the half to pull within 10-6 with 19:55 remaining. The Gaels responded by scoring the final 10 goals of the game to cruise to the win. Cross scored all four of her goals during the 10 goal run in the second half.
Saint Mary's held a 21-17 edge in ground balls, a 19-9 edge in draw controls and committed three less turnovers than Fresno State (14-17).
Saint Mary's is back in action in its MPSF final game when it takes on Stanford at Stanford on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
