DAVIS, Calif. - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team used a 58-25 advantage on the glass as the Gaels defeated UC Davis 75-56 on Thursday night at The Pavilion in Davis.
With the win, Saint Mary's improves to 6-2 while UC Davis drops to 2-4.
"This was an excellent win for us, being our third game in a row on the road," said head coach Paul Thomas. "We had numerous players contribute, not only in scoring, but also in rebounding and making the correct decisions. The team got motivated when they announced the Gaels were behind 10-9 in the all-time series to begin the game."
The Gaels got 25 points off the bench, including a season-high 13 points from freshman Lauren Nicholson. Hayley Hendricksen added eight points and seven rebounds off the bench as well.
Jackie Nared led the Gaels with 18 points with 12 rebounds, while Danielle Mauldin recorded her fifth double-double of the year with 17 points and 15 rebounds.
Mia Greco keyed a 16-1 second-half run with a career-high 14 points, including going 4-for-5 from behind the arc.
The Aggies made it a one-possession game in the second half, pulling within 31-28 at the 17:45 mark. The Gaels then went on a 16-1 run after Greco buried a jumper and Nared had a put back after a missed shot to lead 47-29, with 11:20 left.
Saint Mary's cut back on its turnovers in the second-half and used its rebounding advantage to cruise to the win.
In the first half, the Gaels did a great job of drawing fouls and reached the bonus at the 13:33 mark. SMC could not take advantage, hitting just 2-for-11 from the line as SMC led 25-18 at the break. The Gaels held the Aggies to 0-for-13 from three-point range and the Aggies shot just 22.2 percent in the first half, compared to 45.8 percent for the Gaels. SMC had a 28-14 advantage on the boards at the break.
Saint Mary's is back in action on Saturday, December 15 when it travels to the St. John's Chartwells Holiday Classic in New York. The Gaels take on UCLA at 11:30 a.m. (PT). The game will be live online on ESPN3.com.
