MORAGA, Calif. - Despite a furious rally and a career-high from Jackie Nared, the Saint Mary's women's basketball team suffered a 73-70 loss to San Diego on Thursday night in McKeon Pavilion. With the loss, Saint Mary's drops to 11-5, 3-1 West Coast Conference while San Diego improves to 11-6, 3-2 WCC.
The Gaels trailed by as many as 22 points, down 55-33 with 13:21 left. Saint Mary's went on a 31-10 run and pulled within 65-64 with 2:04 remaining. Saint Mary's could never get the equalizer as San Diego pulled down a couple key offensive rebounds. After a missed USD free-throw, the Gaels attempted a three-pointer on the final possession but came up empty as time expired.
Nared finished with a career-high 30 points on 9-for-18 from the field, adding nine rebounds. Danielle Mauldin recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, with nine boards coming on the offensive glass. Kate Gaze added 15 points.
San Diego was led by Amy Kame with 29 points, six rebounds and seven assists. San Diego outrebounded SMC 38-37. USD shot 50.8 percent from the field while the Gaels shot 37.9 percent.
San Diego controlled the first half and led 38-26 at the half.
Ashlee Smith made a return to the Gaels lineup, her first appearance since Nov. 15. Smith played one minute and sank two free-throws.
Saint Mary's is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Pepperdine at 2:00 p.m. in McKeon Pavilion.
