BERKELEY, Calif. -- Picturesque weather greeted the Saint Mary's women's tennis team as it kicked off the spring season by taking part in the Cal Winter Invitational in Berkeley on Friday.
The nice setting served as a fitting backdrop for some impressive play by the Gaels.
Mid-day action began with Saint Mary's taking on Fresno State in doubles, and it took the Gaels a bit of time to warm up as the Bulldogs claimed two of the three matches.
The team of Catherine Isip and Elizabeth Searl walked away from the session with Saint Mary's lone win, an 8-4 victory over the Bulldogs' Aishwarya Agrawal and Rana Sherif Ahmed.
Once the afternoon singles session against Santa Clara got going, Saint Mary's was ready to turn solid play into wins.
Jenny Jullien would turn her match on court 1 into the Gaels' first win. The native of Perpignan, France fought through some long points late in the match to pick up a 7-5, 6-3 win over Katie Le.
Not too long after Jullien got her win, Danielle Flores followed suit. A 6-4, 7-5 win over Kelly Lamble on court 3 kept the ball rolling for Saint Mary's, and sent Flores to the sideline to cheer on her teammates.
Santa Clara would pick up wins on courts 5 and 6, but the Gaels weren't done. In between the Broncos' wins, Isip closed out her match at No. 2 singles, earning a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Alex Zaniewski.
Saint Mary's sophomore Catherine Leduc was the last Gael on the court, and her match against Maggie McGeorge went right down to the wire. It took a third-set tiebreaker to decided the match, and Leduc wasted no time with a 7-2 victory to win 4-6, 6-2, 7-6.
The Gaels are back in action Saturday with day two in Berkeley set to begin at 10 a.m. Saint Mary's will begin with singles play against Cal, then take on Santa Clara in doubles. The tournament concludes Sunday.
