HONOLULU, Hawaii -- Although the Saint Mary's softball team showed improvement with closer scores, day two of the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic ended the same as the first, with the Gaels dropping a pair of contests at the University of Hawai'i.
What looked to be a pitcher's duel through five innings with Alabama-Birmingham went the way of the Blazers (3-1) when they erupted for five runs in the sixth inning to get a 5-0 win over Saint Mary's.
Sarah Lira got the start for the Gaels and, for five innings, pitched brilliantly. A RBI single by Kristen McGrath got UAB on the board, but that was only the beginning.
A two-out error kept the inning alive, and Chandler Orr delivered the game's big blow with a 2-run home run to left.
Saint Mary's offense never got untracked, with Lira delivering the Gaels' only hit of the game. She allowed just one earned run and struck out three in six innings in the circle.
No. 23-ranked Hawai'i scored a lone run in third inning and that was all it needed to pick up a 1-0 win over Saint Mary's.
Jessica Lemmon started in the circle for the Gaels (0-4) but exited after just one inning. Lira entered and tossed five solid innings, allowing just four hits and striking out five.
Saint Mary's collected five hits, with Alexis Konstantinopoulos providing the highlight with a 2 for 2 night. Erica Musgrave, Lira and Megan Smith also had hits for the Gaels.
Hawai'i got its run when Kayla Wartner scored on a wild pitch. The Wahine had three hits in the win.
Saint Mary's wraps up tournament play on Saturday. The Gaels return home to Cottrell Field on Feb. 16 when they host a doubleheader against Sacramento State. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
