NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Saint Mary's baseball team faced the Big West Freshman of the Year from 2012 and lost a 5-0 decision in the 2013 season opener on Friday afternoon. Saint Mary's was held to four hits on the afternoon, but got several solid pitching outings from a combination of players.

"The defense was good all day," said head coach Jedd Soto. "I expect our guys to learn from this first game and make some adjustments tomorrow."

Saint Mary's had its biggest threat in the top of the third. With two outs, Markus Melgosa got the Gaels' first hit of the season. Ricky Boas followed with a single to put runners on the corners. The Gaels would not score however and the Matadors answered with the games' first run in the bottom of the third.

CSUN had its big inning in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs including back-to-back doubles in the frame.

"Mark Anderson back on the hill was great to see," continued Soto. "He's worked hard to get back out there. He will get stronger every outing... the two freshman pitchers did a nice job of attacking the strike zone in their first outing."

Mark Anderson got the start, returning from Tommy John surgery and missing all of 2012. Anderson went 3.1 innings, allowing two hits and one run. He did allow four walks but pitched well to minimize any damage.

Kelsey Outram helped the Gaels escape a two-on with one out situation in the fourth as CSUN did not score a run.

David Dellaserra and Jacob Valdez each hurled scoreless innings in their collegiate debuts.

Brenden Kalfus and Riley Heinzer had Saint Mary's other two hits in the game.

"I felt like we had the first day jitters which had us pressing," said Soto. "We had too many walks as a pitching staff and punched out too many times to get the offense going."

Saint Mary's returns to Matador Field on Saturday with a double-header beginning at 11:00 a.m. The first game is seven-innings while the second game is the standard nine-inning game.
