NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Saint Mary's baseball team earned its first victory of the season and split a doubleheader on Saturday at Cal State Northridge. In the 8-6 victory, Jordan Mills went six innings for the win while Collin Ferguson drove in four RBI.
Saint Mary's is now 1-2 on the year and will go for the series split on Sunday afternoon.
"I am proud of our guys today," said head coach Jedd Soto. "They battled to get a win in the second game. We had a lot of timely hits, played good defense and had a big outing by Mills, Cornish and Keane. All three guys were very good attacking the strike zone with multiple pitches. Kalfus had two, two strike RBI hits.
The Gaels scored single runs in the first three innings before putting up a two spot in the fifth and a three spot in the sixth. Ferguson finished the day going 3-for-4, coming up a homerun short of the cycle. Brendan Kalfus also had a multi-hit game and had two RBI.
Mills went six innings and scattered seven hits, giving up three runs, striking out five while walking just one. Patrick Keane earned the save, after Gary Cornish pitched the Gaels into the ninth inning.
"Griset was really good in the first game and made one mistake to Williams and that hurt us," said Soto. "Eight freshmen saw action so far, with Hornsby, Ellison and Gonsolin picking up their first collegiate hits today."
In the first game, CSUN defeated SMC 8-3 in a seven inning game. SMC scored first in the second inning, but CSUN added single runs in the third and fourth. The Matadors broke open the game with a three-run fifth inning.
