PALM DESERT, Calif. -- Sophomore Jonathan De Los Reyes shot a 3-under par 69 to lead the Saint Mary's golf team to a second-place tie after the first round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at Classic Club.
As a team, the Gaels shot a 4-under par 284 and sit 11 strokes behind 16th-ranked TCU. San Francisco and Texas Tech also shot 4-under, while Oregon State is in fifth place with a 3-over par 291.
"Today was a good start for us, but we need to stay focused throughout the round and make sure we can put outselves in a position to finish with momentum," said SMC head coach Scott Hardy. "If we play smart shots and stay in position, it is possible to shoot low scores on this golf course. I look forward to seeing if we can chase down TCU and get in position to challenge for the win during the final round."
A native of Antioch, De Los Reyes is tied for third-place in the individual medalist standings. He is just one stroke behind co-leaders Clements Sodet of Texas Tech and Julien Brun of TCU. De Los Reyes shot a bogey-free round, scoring three birdies and 15 pars.
Senior Ben Geyer is tied for fifth place with a 2-under par 70, while freshman Maclayne Marr is tied for 17th at even-par 72. Junior Dalan Refioglu shot a 1-over 73 and is tied for 24th overall, while senior Mac McClung is tied for 36th at 2-over 74.
The teams return to to action tomorrow morning for the tournament's second round beginning at 7:30 a.m.
