SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Day one of the Bronco Classic did not go the way the Saint Mary's softball team hoped it would, with the Gaels dropping a 10-2 decision to San Jose State and a 4-0 contest to Fresno State.
Saint Mary's (1-8) began its day at San Jose State against the host Spartans. Jessica Lemmon took the circle for the Gaels, tossing 1 2/3 innings before departing. Sarah Lira and Lujane Mussadi also pitched for Saint Mary's.
San Jose State took over in the second, scoring six runs to break the game open.
Mussadi toed the slab for the Gaels in a game played at Santa Clara, and continued to pitch well as she allowed just two earned runs in six innings.
The reigning Pacific Coast Softball Conference Player of the Week struck out one, and induced 12 ground ball outs. The Gaels made four errors behind her in the loss.
Fresno State pitcher Jill Compton had a career day for the Bulldogs, tossing a no-hitter to stifle the Saint Mary's offense. She struck out five and walked three in earning the victory.
Saint Mary's returns to the diamond on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it takes on Cal State Northridge. Tournament action wraps up at 3:15 when the Gaels take on the host Broncos.
