MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team improved to 8-0 after losses and defeated Loyola Marymount 70-57 on Saturday night in McKeon Pavilion.
With the win, Saint Mary's improves to 18-8, 10-4 West Coast Conference, while Loyola Marymount drops to 10-17, 4-10 WCC.
Saint Mary's got a season-high from Kate Gaze with 19 points, including 5-for-8 from three-point range. The Gaels were 11-for-21 from downtown on the night. Jackie Nared added 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Morgan Hatten finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
As a team, the Gaels had 18 assists on 23 field goals. SMC outrebounded LMU 48-33.
LMU was led by Deanna Johnson with 23 points and Alex Cowling with 15 points and eight rebounds.
In the first half, the Gaels used a late 7-0 run and the Gaels led 34-32 at halftime. SMC held a slim 18-16 advantage in rebounds.
In the second half, with SMC leading 40-36, the Gaels went on a 15-3 run and led 55-39 after Nared's three-pointer with 8:57 remaining. LMU did cut the deficit to single digits at 61-52 with 3:15 remaining. LMU got as close as 63-57 with 1:52 left, but SMC converted free-throws down the stretch and pulled down key rebounds.
Carli Rosenthal and Danielle Mauldin pulled down 10 rebounds each while Mia Greco added six points and five assists off the bench. Also off the bench, Lauren Nicholson added six points. Hayley Hendricksen added four points and three rebounds in 16 minutes.
Saint Mary's is back in action on Thursday, February 28, at 7:00 p.m. against Santa Clara. The game is a senior night game as there will be a short ceremony before tip.
