LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Jillian Chong scored three goals and Jaclyn Biggers added two but the Saint Mary's lacrosse team couldn't overcome a hot scoring USC squad in a 17-8 defeat.
Saint Mary's (0-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) owned a 3-2 lead after 10 minutes of play. Trailing 2-0 early, the Gaels got goals from Anna Turpit, Allie DeBruhl and Chong to take the lead.
USC (2-2, 1-0 MPSF) bounced back, scoring the next six goals to re-claim the lead. The Trojans carried a 9-4 lead into halftime.
The Gaels got hot right out of the break, scoring the first two goals of the half to close the gap to 9-6. USC responded again though, coming back with two more goals to re-take the momentum.
The win was USC's first in the MPSF, as the Trojans joined the league this season.
Chong scored three points for Saint Mary's to lead the way on the scoresheet. Holly Hayes also found the net, scoring her first goal of the season. Caroline Mahony assisted on two goals as well.
Saint Mary's returns to the field Friday when it hosts UC Davis in the Gaels' 2013 home opener. That match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
