SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- Saint Mary's senior guard Matthew Dellavedova was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week after leading the Gaels to a pair of impressive victories last week.
The Maryborough, Victoria, Australia native, the reigning WCC Player of the Year, averaged 19.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game in leading Saint Mary's to key wins over BYU (64-57) and Creighton (74-66). He came out for less than one minute in the two games, scoring 20 points with 4 rebounds and 4 assists in the win over BYU to clinch second-place in the WCC final regular-season standings. Dellavedova followed that up with a 19 point, five assist, six rebounds effort in a win over Creighton.
Dellavedova, a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award and the Lou Henson Award, leads the WCC in assists with a 6.3 per game average. He is the school's record-holder for career assists, 3-point field goals and appearances. He is tied with Omar Samhan for second on the all-time scoring list and is on pace to set several other school recores.
A two-time Capital One Academic All-America® selection, he has earned three WCC Player of the Week honors during his distinguished career - once as a freshman and once last season as a junior. He is the second Gael to earn the honor this season. Beau Levesque was named Player of the Week on Jan. 21.
Saint Mary's returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Malibu to face Pepperdine in an 8 p.m. tipoff on ESPNU. The Gaels host longtime rival Santa Clara Saturday in both teams' regular-season finale at 7 p.m. in McKeon Pavilion.
