MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's baseball team (4-4) heads to southern California to take on UC Riverside (3-5) for a three-game set beginning on March 1st. After the series, the Gaels will head to UC Santa Barbara (4-4) to face the Gauchos for a single game on Monday.
Saint Mary's recently swept Chicago State and dropped a Tuesday game to No. 14 Stanford. In the three game sweep against Chicago State, the Gaels were led offensively by Anthony Villa. The freshman third baseman went 6-for-13 with three doubles and seven RBI in the series. On the mound, Ryan Brockett headlined the series with a no-hitter in the 15-0 win. Brockett was named the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week as he went the complete game of 9.0 innings, 0 hits, 0 runs, 2 walks and 11 strikeouts.
Last weekend, the Gaels went with Mark Anderson on Friday, Jordan Mills on Saturday and Brockett on Sunday. Kelsey Outram started the Tuesday game going 3.1 innings against the Cardinal.
Villa leads the Gaels with a .286 average while Collin Ferguson is the team leader with 15 total bases. Ferguson hit SMC's first home run of the year against Stanford. DonAndre Clark has been a threat on the base paths, going a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen bases in 2013.
On the mound, Mills leads the Gaels with 13 innings pitched in two starts. He is holding opponents to a .222 average. Mills, Brockett, Outram and Gary Cornish account for SMC's wins this year. Patrick Keane is 2-for-2 in save opportunities.
UC Riverside is coming off a four-game series split against Sacramento State. Earlier this season, UCR defeated Utah Valley, and lost to Gonzaga and Oregon State.
UCR is led by Clayton Prestridge with a .375 average and 12 hits in 32 at-bats. Kyle Boudreau is hitting .333 and has UCR's home run this season.
On the mound, Dylan Stuart is 1-1 with a 2.63 ERA. Trevor Frank has UCR's only save of the season and is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA.
UC Santa Barbara opened the year by taking 2-of-3 against Fresno State. Last week UCSB split a four game set with San Francisco. UCR lost its Tuesday game against UCLA, 12-3.
