CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Saint Mary’s baseball junior infielder Zach Kirtley earned his first preseason accolade of 2017 Monday when he was named to the Perfect Game/Rawlings Preseason All-American Third Team.

Kirtley hit .323 with seven home runs and 20 doubles in 2016. He was an integral part of the Gaels’ drive to their first-ever West Coast Conference regular season and tournament championships, as well as the program’s first trip to an NCAA Regional. He was named first team all-WCC after hitting .343 in conference play. Kirtley led Saint Mary’s with 43 RBIs, a .504 slugging percentage and .428 on-base percentage.

He was named WCC Tournament MVP after hitting .588 with six RBIs, four runs and three doubles to help SMC clinch its first NCAA postseason berth. He also had four stolen bases and helped the Gaels turn 43 double plays in 2016. Kirtley spent his summer in the prestigious Cape Cod League, finishing among the league’s top-10 in both home runs and RBIs.

The Gaels’ 2017 season begins on Feb. 17 in Las Vegas. The home schedule opens on Feb. 23 against Pac-12 Conference member and 2016 NCAA Regional participant Washington. Stay tuned to SMCGaels.com for tickets information.
