TEMPE, Ariz. — After a tight loss to New Mexico early in the day, Saint Mary’s rebounded with an offensive outburst and victory over UT Arlington to improve to 2-2 on the season during the second day of the Kajikawa Classic.

A late rally fell just short in the Gaels’ first game on Saturday against the Lobos. After UNM took a 4-0 advantage in the opening frame, Saint Mary’s would be held scoreless until the sixth inning when junior Hailey Sparacino scored on a Halle Sullivan groundout.

In the last inning for the Gaels, Saint Mary’s managed to get their first two batters on base via walks. After a pop out, Dylan Linton laced a single to right to score Cara DiMercurio and move Eryn McCoy to third base. A sacrifice fly would make it a one run game but the Gaels couldn’t push across the game-tying run afterwards.

Junior Katlyn Whitt made her first start of the season on the bump for the Gaels and pitched five innings while surrendering two earned runs. Izzy Ortiz would finish the game with two scoreless innings in relief. On offense, Sparacino and DiMercurio each notched a single and run scored in the loss.

Freshman Jaymee Campbell went 4-for-4 with four singles as part of a 12 hit barrage for the Gaels in a 4-1 win over UT Arlington.

Saint Mary’s cracked the 1-1 score in the sixth inning with a four hit, three run frame aided by a Mavericks’ error. Eight of the nine Gaels’ starters recorded a hit for the offense and sophomore Bailey Lotz reached base three times with two singles and a hit by pitch.

McCoy took the rubber for her first collegiate start and pitched 4.1 innings while allowing just four hits and one run. Senior Katie Moss came in relief for McCoy and logged 2.2 innings with two strikeouts to seal the win for the Gaels.

In the final day of the tournament tomorrow, Saint Mary’s will take on two Midwest teams in Purdue at 9 a.m. followed by Indiana at 11:45 a.m. You can find results and recaps of the action at
