RENO, Nev. — Saint Mary’s (10-12) salvaged a win in the final day of the Nevada Classic with an offensive outburst as they defeated the Nevada Wolf Pack, 9-4.
Despite dropping their first three games of the tournament, an undeterred Gaels’ lineup scored a season-high nine runs against a strong Nevada (14-10) team. Saint Mary’s managed 10 hits and four walks in the victory.
On offense, Hailey Sparacino, Dylan Linton, and Abbey Mariani all recorded two-RBI singles scattered throughout the final three innings. Mariani’s single in the fifth inning capped off a four-run frame for the Gaels and proved to be the difference maker in the game as SMC took a 5-4 lead from her base hit.
Linton finished the game 4 for 5 with a double. The sophomore center fielder wreaked havoc during the Nevada Classic, going 9 for 16 at the plate. Hannah Chew also had a multi-hit game for the Gaels in the win.
Katie Moss picked up the win in relief for Saint Mary’s. The senior pitched four shutout innings and struck out six while allowing just one hit. Izzy Ortiz started on the mound for the Gaels and threw three frames with four runs allowed, all of which were unearned during an error induced third inning.
The Gaels’ next action will come in their final tournament of the regular season at the Aggie Tournament in Davis, Calif. The tournament spans all of next weekend from Mar. 17-19 and Saint Mary’s is scheduled to play five games in total. Live stats for each contest can be found on the Gaels’ softball schedule page.
