LOGAN, Utah — Facing nationally-ranked No. 39 Utah State for its first of two road matches, Saint Mary’s could not overcome the slow starts and eventually fell to the Aggies, 4-0, Thursday afternoon at USU Tennis Complex.
The Gaels (6-12, 1-4 WCC) will head to Provo, Utah to take on BYU for West Coast Conference action tomorrow. First serve versus the Cougars is set for 1 p.m.
The day’s action started off with tightly contested doubles contests. Damon Kesaris and Nash Vollenweider played together as the top doubles team, and nearly pulled off their third straight win. The duo fell just short, losing 6-4 in the top doubles match.
On court 2, Manuel De Luis Lamelas and Matthew Campana were also battling in a highly competitive match. After intense rallies and exciting points, the Gaels dropped the match, 6-4, as the Aggies claimed the doubles point.
The singles action was a struggle, as the Gaels dropped matches on courts 1, 3 and 6. The Aggies won all three matches in straight sets to claim improve their overall record to 15-7.
Kesaris’ nine match win streak snapped today after his loss on court 1. The newcomer is still an impressive 6-1 as the top singles player for the Gaels, and 8-1 in his last 10 matches.
