MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary’s softball team will remain home this week to host San Diego (16-16, 2-1 WCC) for a three-game conference series from Friday and Saturday at Cottrell Field.
The Gaels (15-21, 1-2 WCC) are 4-5 at home this season and are coming off a week against Bay Area rival Santa Clara. SMC won one of the three games versus the Broncos, as all games were decided by two runs or less.
First year player Nikki Alexander continues to hit well for the Gaels, as she leads the team with a .388 batting average and 40 hits. The second baseman, who leads off the Gaels lineup, also has the most runs on the team (22). Alexander is second in batting average within the West Coast Conference. The freshman leads all players in the conference with a .667 batting average in conference play.
Shortstop Hailey Sparacino is second on the squad with 32 hits and is batting a .299 average. The junior leads the young Gaels team with nine doubles and an impressive 24 RBIs. Sparacino is third in conference play with her .500 hit percentage.
SMC’s pitching staff is top notch in the WCC with the 2.56 ERA. Katie Moss (8-8) leads the Gaels in the circle with a 2.22 ERA and nine complete games. The senior has 103 strikeouts in just 113.1 innings pitched.
Katyn Whitt notched her first conference win of the season last week and now holds a win-loss record, 5-6. Whitt is second on the team in innings pitched (67.1 IP) and holds a solid 2.70 ERA. She is third in the WCC with a 1.04 ERA during conference play giving up just one earned run.
About the Toreros
San Diego is coming off a series win at home versus Pacific. The Toreros took two out of three games against the Tigers and have won three of their last four games.
USD is first in conference batting with a .294 batting average. Taylor Spence currently leads all players in the WCC with 45 hits through 32 games. Spence is hitting .429 on the season with 25 runs.
Megan Sabbatini is 7-8 on the season and currently holds a 4.19 ERA. She has thrown five complete games and is allowing batters to hit .291 so far in the season.
After the home stand versus USD, Saint Mary’s will hit the road for a series at LMU. The Gaels will take on the Lions on Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30.
