MORAGA, Calif. — In the season’s final home match, the Saint Mary’s men’s tennis team honored senior Manuel De Luis Lamelas for a pre-match ceremony before hosting the West Coast Conference leading Portland Pilots (16-2, 6-1 WCC).
The Gaels (7-15, 2-6 WCC) played strong tennis all afternoon long and nearly pulled away with the doubles point versus No. 43 Portland.
Paired with Matthew Campana, De Luis Lamelas forced a tough match on court 2. The Gaels duo was deadlocked in a tiebreaker, but eventually fell, 7-6 to the Pilots team. UP would claim wins by the identical score, 6-4, on courts 1 and 3 to claim the 1-0 advantage.
Two of the six singles matches would go unfinished as UP would win on courts 2, 3, 4 and 5. Playing in his usual No. 1 spot, Kesaris would drop the first set 5-7, but battle back in the second frame to a 2-2 draw before the match went unfinished.
Daniel Krutik played in the No. 6 slot for the Gaels, and played fantastic tennis for the 6-4, 3-0 lead in the match. Krutik’s match would be called unfinished.
Playing on court 2, Campana showcased some of his best tennis as the junior battled in a tight battle. After dropping the opening set, Campana had chances to force a third set, but fell just short in the second set, 7-5.
One day after clinching the win over Gonzaga, Nash Vollenweider played great tennis and won his singles match on court 3. The junior dominated to cruise to a 6-4, 6-3 win.
Saint Mary’s will travel in the final week of the regular season to face Pacific on Saturday, April 22. The Gaels will face the Tigers at 1 p.m.
