PROVO, Utah. — Connor Blick shot 3-under par in his opening round and the Saint Mary’s golf team is in solo second after a solid 5-under first round of the 2017 West Coast Conference Championship at a chilly and overcast Riverside Country Club.

Saint Mary’s had four out of five player score at least even par in the opening 18 holes. Host of this year’s championship, BYU leads the Gaels by four strokes after an opening round 279 (-9). Behind SMC, Pepperdine sits in solo third at 3-under par. LMU and Santa Clara round out the top-5 at 2-under par.

The Gaels will be paired with BYU and LMU in round 2 of the championship with the first pairing set for a 10:50 a.m. MT tee time off the first tee.

Blick started his round hot with a pair of birdies in his first two holes. The junior would bogey hole 16, but bounce right back with an impressive birdie on the par 3 17th as the rain began to fall at Riverside CC.

“The rain started to fall when I was on the 17th hole, my eighth hole of the day,” said Blick. “The rain didn’t necessarily give more opportunities to score, but we just had to grind a bit more since the rain and wind made it that much more harder to score.”

Blick would shoot 1-under in the front nine of the course, scoring birdies on the holes 2 and 7.

Fellow junior Roman Aragon finished his strong en route to a 2-under par finish after the opening 18 holes. Aragon shot even in his opening nine, but made three birdies in the front nine of the course. Aragon would score his second birdie of the round at the par 3 3rd. Aragon would then record back-to-back birdies on 7 and 8 to finish with an opening round of 70.

Perry Cohen and Hunter Rappleye each grinded their way to an even-par 72 to place tied-16th. Cohen scored all pars in his first 10 holes before an unfortunate bogey on hole 2. The San Diego native would overcome his bogey with birdies on 6 and 7 to be at 1-under. Cohen would bogey his last hole of the day to score even-par.

Despite being 2-over with four holes to play, Rappleye turned things around and scored a pair of birdies for the round of 72. The senior notched birdies on holes 6 and 8, and recorded an impressive par on the tough par 3 9th.

Pavan Sagoo struggled in his opening round, but grinded for a 2-over 74. Last week’s Cougar Classic champion, Sagoo started his round with an opening hole birdie. After three bogeys in his next 12 holes, the junior from London got one back with a birdie on the par 5 5th. Sagoo would score an unfortunate bogey on hole 6 and finish the round with pars to finish at 2-over.
