SPOKANE, Wash. — Another big offensive showing and comeback effort fell just short for the Saint Mary's baseball team Sunday, as Gonzaga avoided a sweep at the hands of the Gaels with runs in the bottom of the ninth and 10th to walk off with a 12-11 at Patterson Baseball Complex.

Saint Mary's (28-15, 11-7 WCC) carried an 11-10 lead for four innings before Gonzaga (26-16, 15-6 WCC) rallied. The Gaels had erased deficits of 7-2 and 10-5. But the Bulldogs got their leadoff runner on in both the ninth and 10th frames, then got one-out RBI singles both times to bring them home, first to tie it in the ninth and then to win it in the 10th.

Saint Mary's again had a big day at the plate, scoring 11 runs on 16 hits. The Gaels posted six multi-hit games, led by Zach Kirtley who went 3 for 6 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. It was Kirtley's two-run shot in the top of the fifth that put the Gaels on top 11-10 to complete the comeback.

But the Saint Mary's pitching staff continued to struggle with surrendering the long ball. All of Gonzaga's first 10 runs came via three home runs, including two in the first inning. Jacobs hit a grand slam with no outs and Roberts completed a two-out rally with a three-run bomb to make it 7-2 in the first inning. After the Gaels had climbed back to 7-5, Johnston tacked on another 3-run home run to make it 10-5.

The Saint Mary's pitching staff allowed multiple home runs in all three games of the series at Gonzaga for a total of seven. It has allowed at least one home run in four straight games and multiple homers in four of the last seven.

Saint Mary's travels to UC Davis Tuesday to conclude a three-game non-conference season series. The Gaels then host San Diego in a pivotal West Coast Conference series between the fourth and fifth-place teams, both vying for a spot in the season's-end WCC Tournament.

Tickets are available for purchase on or by calling the SMC Ticket Office at (925) 631-GoTx. All three games of the San Diego series will be streamed live on
