HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. — The Saint Mary's beach volleyball pair of Lindsey Knudsen and Payton Rund won twice Friday in the single elimination round of the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championship, reaching the quarterfinals before bowing out in a tightly-contested three-set match at Hermosa Beach.
Knudsen and Rund finished third in the top-ranked Pool A, slotting them into a play-in match for the Round of 16. There, they swept Crissy Jones and Tia Scambray of Washington, 21-19, 21-19, to get into the Final 16.
They advanced to the quarterfinals with another victory in the afternoon, this time beating West Coast Conference rivals Deahna Kraft and Anika Wilson of Pepperdine in three sets, 21-19, 12-21, 15-10.
Knudsen and Rund were very close to making it to Championship Saturday. Two points-close, in fact. The Gaels took on the pair of Delaney Rohan and Chelsea Ross from Georgia State and were edged in three sets, with two of them going the maximum points – 19-21, 21-17, 13-15.
The SMC pair began their day with the final match of pool play. Knudsen and Rund faced USC's No. 1 pair of Kelly Claes and Sarah Hughes for the third time this season, falling 21-16, 21-18.
Knudsen and Rund conclude the 2017 spring season going 27-8 as Saint Mary's No. 1 pair. The sophomores earned nine wins over No. 1 pairs from nationally ranked teams during the regular season and WCC Tournament. They followed that up by making an appearance at the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championship, going 3-3 and making the quarterfinals of the elimination round.
