SAN BRUNO, Calif. — The Saint Mary's women's basketball team will host all nine of its West Coast Conference rivals in 2017-18, starting Dec. 30 versus perennial contender BYU and ending with Senior Night on Feb. 18 against Portland, as the conference schedule was announced Tuesday.
The conference season begins on Dec. 28 when the Gaels (20-13 in 2016-17) visit Loyola Marymount. SMC opens its home WCC slate against the Cougars two days before the New Year on Dec. 30. It returns two weeks later on Jan. 11 to host rival Santa Clara for the start of a four-game WCC home stand. That home stand also includes Gonzaga on Jan. 18, whom the Gaels faced three times last season, including in the WCC Tournament championship game.
“This season will be no different than any other WCC schedule,” said Saint Mary's head coach Paul Thomas. “All games will be a challenge. I am confident we will be prepared as a team and a coaching staff.”
The Gaels won 20 games for the sixth straight year in 2016-17 and made the postseason for the eighth consecutive time (WNIT). They finished tied for second place in the WCC, their second straight runner-up finish. SMC also made the WCC Tournament championship game for the first time since 2010-11. The women had five members honored on the all-WCC teams and three make the WCC All-Academic Team.
