SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — An 81st minute goal by the Mustangs proved to be the difference maker in Sunday's afternoon contest between Saint Mary's and Cal Poly as the Gaels ultimately fell, 1-0.

Saint Mary's moved to 1-2-2 on the season while Cal Poly clinched their first win of the year and improved to 1-4-0.

The Gaels nearly tied the match in the 90th minute when sophomore midfielder Jakub Svehlik carried the ball deep into the Cal Poly penalty box but was called for a foul near the six-yard line to spoil the threat. Svehlik led the Gaels' offense with three shots in the match.

  • Cal Poly (1-0): The Mustangs scored the only goal of the match in the 81st minute as Cal Poly's Jose Rivera carried the ball into the Gael penalty area before dishing a pass off to defender Nick Carroll who finished from six yards out.

  • Saint Mary's outshot Cal Poly 11-9 in Sunday's contest including four shots on goal.
  • Remi Prieur made his fourth start of the season for the Gaels and recorded one save.
  • The Gaels were charged with four yellow cards in the match with two coming in the last minute of play.
  • Saint Mary's has outshot their opponents 35-16 in the first half this season.
  • Sunday's matchup between the Gaels and Mustangs was their first since 2006. Cal Poly has won the last three matches between the two clubs, all by a 1-0 score. SMC's most recent victory was a 2-0 road win in 1999.

  • The Gaels will travel to Colorado next weekend to take on Air Force and Denver. Friday's contest against Air Force and Sunday's game versus Denver will both take place at 7 p.m.
