Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's head men's basketball coach Randy Bennett announced the signing of Stephen Holt (Portland, OR) on Thursday. Holt is currently in his senior year at Jesuit High School, and will join the Gaels for the 2010-11 season. As a junior at Jesuit HS, Holt averaged 8.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, while helping his team post a 25-3 overall record and an Oregon 6A State championship in 2009.
Holt, a 6-3, 190-pound true point guard, was also a First Team All-Metro League selection, and was named to the First Team All-State following the completion of the state championship in 2009. This year, he was a Second Team - Best of the West honoree by the Long Beach Press Telegram, which was announced last week.
According to ESPN.com, Holt is developing into the No. 1 point guard prospect out West for the class of 2010, and ranks as the 39th best point guard in the country. He has ideal size, strength, speed, and quickness to play at the highest level. Most importantly, he is a true point guard who gets his teammates involved and he's fundamentally sound. He has a deceptive burst in transition where he can get to the rim or deliver the assist to the open teammate. His passing is crisp and always on the money. He understands angles while feeding the post and he can deliver the pass with either hand.
