Moraga, Calif. - Saint Mary's men's basketball senior guard Mickey McConnell has been named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week, as well as TheHoopsReport.com National Player of the Week as announced today. McConnell was instrumental in helping the Gaels close out the year with wins over Mississippi State and Hartford.
For the week McConnell averaged 24.5 points per game, with 10 assists and three rebounds. For the week, he shot 14-for-28 (.500) from the field and 9-for-20 (.450) from 3-point range.
Against Mississippi State, McConnell was near perfect. The native of Mesa, Arizona had career-highs in points (28) and assists (13), for his first double-double of the season. He shot 8-for-18 from the field and went 5-for-13 from behind the arc. Even more impressive, his 13 assists came against just one turnover, which didn't come till late in the second half.
McConnell caped off the week scoring 21 points with seven assists in the 2010 finale against Hartford. He was 6-for-10 from the floor and 4-for-7 from 3-point range. His seven assists against Hartford gave him 345 assists for his career, passing Josh Unruh (1993-97) for sixth all-time.
McConnell is now averaging 14.2 points and 5.4 assists, while his 2.68 assist to turnover ratio ranks 26th in the country nationally. He is also shooting 46.3 percent from behind the arc and 90.5 percent at the free throw line.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Thursday, January 6, when the Gaels travel to Los Angeles, Calif. to take on Loyola Marymount at 6:00 PM at Gersten Pavilion. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
