MORAGA, Calif. -- After his attention-grabbing victory at last week's West Coast Conference Championships, junior golfer Ben Geyer was named the SMC Student-Athlete of the Week.
A native of Arbuckle, Calif., a town of just more than 3,000 residents located approximately 50 miles northwest of Sacramento, Geyer became the fourth Saint Mary's golfer to win medalist honors at the league championships. He holed a long putt off the fringe for birdie on the tournament's final hole to earn a one-stroke victory at San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister, Calif.
Geyer, who advanced to the round of 16 at the U.S. Amateur Championships last summer, was honored as a first-team all-WCC and Academic all-WCC selection. He registered 10 top-20 finishes in his 11 regular-season tournaments this season and currently ranks second nationally in total birdies.
Saint Mary's took home its first WCC team title last week and will return to action in the NCAA regionals, scheduled for May 17-19. NCAA Tournament participants are revealed on Monday, May 7 at 6 p.m. online at NCAA.com.
