MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's women's rowing team is ready for its biggest race of the season, as the Gaels travel to Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif., for the 15th West Coast Conference Championships on Saturday, May 12.
SMC will have three boats competing in three events as they try to build on the already impressive season. "This is a team that loves to race," said head coach Nicole Younts. "On top of that, WCC's always brings out the best in everyone so I expect this to be some very fast racing. We're looking forward to it."
The Gaels were picked to finish third in the WCC in a pre-season poll, behind Gonzaga and San Diego. The Toreros were picked to repeat as conference championships this season. On Saturday, SMC will battle with the Bulldogs and USD as well as boats from Loyola Marymount, Creighton, Santa Clara, and Portland.
The varsity-4 boat will be the first event of the weekend, as they hit the water at 9:00 a.m. The lineup for the V4's will be: Coxswain: Jessica Sin, Rachel Alvarez, Marianna Irby, Allison McKenzie, and Rebecca Beutler.
The second varsity-8 race will be next and will be on the water around 9:20 a.m. The lineup for the 2V8's will be: Coxswain: Bennett Collier, Brandynne Cho, Caitlin Evans, Kira Paulin, Katie Wahl, Nicolette Pierantoni, Alexandra Iwaszewicz, Tessa Cunha, and Nathalie Lambrecht.
The day will wrap up with the varsity-8 race which is schedule to take place at 9:40 a.m. The Gaels V8 boat is primed to make a move this year, as they enter this weekend's race after having winning silver at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships two weeks ago at Lake Natoma. The lineup for the V8 boat will be: Coxswain: Chelsea Serrano, Haley Adams, Michelle Felmlee-Gartner, Dana Cook
Maryann Concannon, Deanna Estes, Stacey Boss, Christina Bennett, and Savina Brown.
