The Gaels are coming off an exciting WCC opening win last week. After a scoreless first-half, Saint Mary's scored in the 64th minute on a strike by Melinda Madden. SMC scored another goal in the 67th minute to lead 2-0.
With under two minutes left in the match, Gonzaga scored twice to tie up the match at 2-2.
In overtime with a draw seeming likely, Vicki Shimkus broke through and beat the keeper to the goal for the game-winner in the 110th minute for the SMC win.
Shimkus was later named WCC Player of the Week for her two-goal match against the Bulldogs.
Saint Mary's is 9-12 all-time against San Diego. Last year the Toreros defeated the Gaels by a 2-1 score in overtime. USD scored in the 98th minute to secure the victory. Christina Tognetti scored for the Gaels.
The last time SMC defeated USD was during the 2009 campaign, a 2-1 victory for the Gaels as USD was ranked No. 25 at the time. It was during head coach Kai Edwards' first season with the program.
