SAN JOSE DEL CABO, Mexico -- Saint Mary's senior Ben Geyer shot a 1-over par 73 today to finish in a tie for fifth place after the first day at the Cabo Collegiate at Querencia Golf Club.
As a team, the Gaels shot a 13-over par 301 but sits just five strokes behind tournament-leading Mississippi State. Saint Mary's is in sole possession of fifth place, one stroke behind fourth-place Florida State and South Florida.
The 12-team field will return to action tomorrow for a single-round beginning at 9 a.m. at the 7,070-yard, par 72 Querencia Golf Club. The final round is scheduled for Tuesday at 8 a.m.
Geyer, a native of Arbuckle, Calif., is just three strokes behind tournament leader Will Bishop of Kentucky, who shot a 2-under par 70 and is at the top of the leaderboard. LMU's Tyler Torano is tied with South Florida's Richard James and Abilene Christian's Alex Carpenter for second-place at even-par 72.
Senior Mac McClung is tied with teammate Alex Bungert for 17th place at 3-over 75, giving Saint Mary's three players in the tournament's top-20.
Juniors Dalan Refioglu and Nick Sako, playing as an individual, are tied with sophomore Jonathan De Los Reyes for 36th place at 6-over 78.
