MORAGA, Calif. -- Saint Mary's will play host this weekend to one of the fall's biggest men's tennis tournaments, as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association holds a 2012 Regional Tennis Championship at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex from Friday through next Tuesday.
The tournament winner will automatically qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships held in Flushing Meadows, NY from Nov. 8-11.
From the home team's perspective, building on recent progress is one of the main goals for Saint Mary's.
In recent singles action, Tuomas Manner fought back after a first round loss at the Battle in the Bay tournament in San Francisco last week, ending his run on the final day of competition with a loss in the consolation semifinals.
He'll look to build on that result on his home court, joined in the singles draw by teammates Alec Wagner, James Markiewicz, Jesse Kiuru, Joakim Norstrom, Seif El Sherbini and Thomas Hunt.
On the doubles side, the team of Kiuru and Norstrom will try to continue its recent success after reaching the final of the Aggie Invitational at UC Davis on Oct. 7.
There won't be an easy road to success for anyone competing this weekend. In singles, 10 players scheduled to play landed a spot in the ITA preseason rankings in September.
Washington's Kyle McMorrow headlines that list, checking in as the No. 14 player in the country. California's Ben McLachlan is the next highest at No. 16. Two doubles teams are also nationally ranked, led by the Oregon tandem of Robin Cambier and Jeff Mullen (No. 27).
Play on Friday and Saturday begins at 8:30 a.m., with matches taking place both at Saint Mary's and Moraga Country Club. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday action will all take place at Saint Mary's, with play scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
