MORAGA, Calif. -- The Saint Mary's men's tennis team ensured it will have a big presence on day two of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regional Tournament as three Gaels advanced through the first two rounds on Friday at Saint Mary's.
Joakim Norstrom punched his ticket to the second day of competition thanks to tough wins in two matches. He beat Gonzaga's Hayden Smith 6-2, 7-5 in the first round, then outlasted Washington's Nicholas Kamisar 6-4, 7-5 to advance.
Jesse Kiuru got a bye in the first round, but after dropping the first set to Pacific's Denis Stolyarov 6-7, Kiuru came back to win the next two sets 7-5, 6-2 and move on.
Tuomas Manner joined his teammates in the third round by notching two impressive wins. He beat Portland's Jackson Martin 6-2, 6-1 in the first round, then took down California's Wyatt Houghton 6-3, 6-1 later in the day.
Main draw singles action resumes Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The doubles draw gets underway Saturday as well, with play beginning at 9:45 a.m.
