MORAGA, Calif. -- Though the Saint Mary's men's tennis team is far from done at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regional, the Gaels have already done enough to earn a little recognition.
For their play over the first three days of the tournament, Jesse Kiuru and Tuomas Manner have both been named Saint Mary's Student-Athlete of the Week.
Manner and Kiuru each had a part in making Saint Mary's history, as they combined with Joakim Norstrom to place three Gaels in the round of 16 for the first time.
With wins in that round, Manner and Kiuru advanced to the quarterfinals. Kiuru lost a tough three-set match with Stanford's Nolan Paige, but Manner used a stirring comeback to beat Santa Clara's Ilya Osintsev in three sets and become the first Gael ever to reach the Regional semifinals. He'll be back in action on Tuesday with a semifinal match against Cal's Ben McLachlan.
Kiuru also reached the quarterfinals in doubles, and he'll team with Norstrom on Tuesday as the Gaels continue their quest for an automatic bid to the ITA National Indoor Championships.
