FRESNO, Calif. -- Catherine Leduc won two matches and Danielle Flores won one as the Saint Mary's women's tennis team competed Friday in the first day of the Bulldog Classic hosted by Fresno State.

The initial tournament draw was reshuffled prior to play beginning Friday, as the top Saint Mary's player in the draw, No. 1 seed Catherine Isip, withdrew.

The revamped bracket left Leduc with a first round match against Fresno State's Olga Kirpicheva, and the Gaels sophomore advanced with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory. Leduc kept that momentum going in her next match, defeating Cal Poly's Gabby Gatewood 6-3, 6-1 to advance to Saturday's action.

Flores was given a first round bye, then took three sets to beat Loyola Marymount's Reka Rohonyi 6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-1.

In other Flight A singles action, Hannah Liljekvist dropped a 7-6 (4), 6-3 decision to Cal Poly's Katherine Webb. Elizabeth Searl also dropped her first round match against Pacific's Iveta Masarova.

Melissa Arthur found success for Saint Mary's in the Flight B singles draw, beating Fresno Pacific's Anna Mikhaylova 7-5, 7-5 and Pacific's Christiana Ferrari 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-4 to advance to Saturday's semifinals.

In doubles, Arthur was part of a tennis rarity, as withdrawls led to her teaming with Cal Poly's Anna Klavins for a first round match against Flores and Liljekvist. The team from Saint Mary's pulled out an 8-3 victory.
