SAN BRUNO, Calif. --Saint Mary's senior Trevor Newquist was named the West Coast Conference Defender of the Year and is one of six Gaels to earn all-league recognition today.
Newquist is joined by classmate Jose Cabeza on the all-league first-team, while Tariq Adam, Nathan Arambula, Andre Rawls and Forrest Solis earned honorable mention all-WCC honors. Solis also earned recognition on the WCC all-Freshman Team.
San Diego coach Seamus McFadden was recognized as the 2012 WCC Coach of the Year, while Santa Clara senior Erik Hurtado is the WCC Player of the Year. Larry Jackson, a senior from Santa Clara, is the Goalkeeper of the Year and Loyola Marymount forward Pedro Velazquez is the Freshman of the Year in the conference.
Newquist anchored a Saint Mary's defense that had four shutouts during conference play. He also finished in the top-10 in the WCC with 0.73 points per game in WCC contests. Newquist is the first Gael to be named Defensive POY since Jordan Grider in 2009.
"This is such a great honor," said Newquist. "A lot of credit goes to my teammates since this is really a reflection of how good we were defensively throughout the year. This is certainly more of a team award than an individual one. So, more than anything else I'm really proud of what we've accomplished as a group."
