MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's volleyball team (17-10) returns to the postseason for a sixth time as it takes on San Diego State (23-7) in NCAA Tournament first-round action in Los Angeles at the Galen Center. The Gaels will take on the Aztecs at 5:00 p.m. on the USC campus. The winner of the match will advance to the second-round and face the winner of No. 4 USC vs. Fairfield. The second-round match will be played on Friday night.
Saint Mary's is 3-2 all-time against San Diego State, as the Gaels have won the last three meetings. The teams last met on September 10, 2010 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Gaels won the match 25-19, 25-15, 25-17. Lauren Corp, Gabby Jolly, Jordan Shaw, Missy White, Natalie Loos and Sarah Reams all appeared in the match for SMC.
The Gaels finished the year third in the West Coast Conference with a 12-4 mark in WCC action. SMC defeated every team in conference, including wins against Brigham Young, San Diego and Pepperdine while they were all nationally ranked. The Gaels also split with NCAA Tournament qualifier Loyola Marymount and took two from Santa Clara.
SDSU and SMC have faced four common opponents this season. The Aztecs have defeated California and San Diego, and have losses against Santa Clara and Hawaii. The Gaels also lost to California and Hawaii, defeated Santa Clara twice and split two matches against San Diego.
Statistically, the Gaels are led by their two, WCC All-Conference First-Teamers in Kristina Graven (3.37 kills per set) and Gabby Jolly (3.17 kills, .370 attack percentage, 1.17 blocks).
Lauren Corp is third all-time in school history with 1,248 kills and is third on the squad with 2.82 kills per set. Jordan Shaw also adds 2.38 kills per set. Missy White and Dalas Dodd are the setters as White missed the entire non-conference schedule and the first month of conference play with an injury. Dodd leads the Gaels with 31 aces while White averages a team-high 0.57 aces per set.
SDSU is led by Raegan Shelton with 3.11 kills per set while Summer Nash adds 2.95 kills per set and Andrea Hannasch averages 2.91 kills per set. Johnna Fouch is the setter with 9.16 assists per set and the Aztecs hit at a .245 clip.
The Aztecs enter the postseason having won 12 straight matches.
