MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's baseball team held its first official practice on Friday afternoon at the new Louis Guisto Field. With the first game one month away, the Gaels took advantage of a perfect January afternoon with sunny skies and temperatures in the 60s.
"Everyone is excited to be back on campus and to get our season underway," said head coach Jedd Soto. "This is a talented team that's ready to compete at a high level."
While the Gaels lost three players to last year's MLB Draft, the Gaels have reloaded and welcome back some familiar faces.
"The leadership this fall has been impressive and everyone looks sharp," said Soto. "Right handed pitchers (Mark) Anderson and (Kurt) Jahnke are healthy and on track to throw when games begin in February and the freshman group have really made some big strides."
Saint Mary's has its first game on February 15, the start of a four-game set at Cal State Northridge. SMC has its home opener on Friday, February 22 when it hosts Chicago State at 2:00 p.m. The Gaels will play 32 home games in 2013.
"The work ethic, attitude and focus was very good this fall. I look forward to carrying some of that passion and energy into spring, said Soto."
