MORAGA, Calif. -- It would be hard to get off to a better start than Saint Mary's women's tennis player Jenny Jullien.
With three wins in her first three matches, and with all coming against opponents ranked in the top 30 nationally, Jullien has been named SMC Athlete of the Week.
Her season began at the Cal Winter Invitational, with a match against West Coast Conference foe Katie Le of Santa Clara. Jullien battled through a tough first set, and eventually finished off a 7-5, 6-3 win over the No. 26-ranked Le.
The next day, Jullien was back at it, this time against No. 9-ranked Anett Schutting of Cal. As she had the day before, Jullien finished things in straight sets, earning a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
On Sunday, Jullien was back atop the lineup as the Gaels faced UNLV in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Before hitting the court for singles, Jullien teamed with Audrey Leitz for a convincing 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles.
Once singles started, Jullien lined up opposite UNLV's top player, No. 20-ranked Aleksandra Josifoska. A 4-6 win in the first set by Josifoska put Jullien down early.
That wouldn't deter the Gaels' ace, as she tried to help Saint Mary's rally for the team victory. Jullien won the second set 6-2, extending the match.
In the third, it became clear that Jullien would have a chance to clinch a Saint Mary's win. She wasted little time, winning the set 6-3 to give the Gaels their fourth point and the team victory.
Jullien and the Gaels finish play at the ITA Kick-Off on Monday against Cal, then travel to San Diego to play Washington and San Diego State next weekend. They'll make their home debut against Cal Poly on Feb. 10 at 11 a.m.
