MORAGA, Calif. -- The Saint Mary's men's tennis team made its home debut a resounding success on Monday, scoring a 7-0 win over Sonoma State at Korth Tennis Complex.
The Gaels got started with doubles, and the first win came on court one as Joakim Norstrom and Jesse Kiuru got out to a quick lead and finished it from there in an 8-0 win over David Hutton and Robert Henry.
The win was especially sweet for Wagner, a freshman from Maui, Hawaii. His 6-1, 5-7, 10-8 win over Vincent Payanetti was his first victory as a Gael.
Sonoma State battled throughout the match, fighting gamely as the Division II school took another step up to face a Division I opponent.
Saint Mary's will be back in action this weekend as it travels to Arizona to face the Wildcats on both Friday and Saturday. After that comes a trip to the Olympic Club to face San Francisco, and the Gaels return home on Feb. 10 to face Pacific at noon.
