TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Saint Mary's men's tennis team will spend much of its non-conference schedule playing against some of the best teams in the Western United States.
This weekend is no different, as the Gaels head to Arizona to play a pair of matches against the Wildcats. Action begins Friday at 10 a.m., and resumes Saturday at 9 a.m.
Saint Mary's improved to 2-1 on the season with a 7-0 win over Sonoma State on Monday. The Gaels won all nine of their matches against the Seawolves in straight sets.
Leading the Gaels at the top of the lineup was Jesse Kiuru, who earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles and teamed with Joakim Norstrom to pick up an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles.
Tuomas Manner, Norstrom, Samuel Bloore, Seif El Sherbini and Alec Wagner also got singles wins on Monday. For Wagner, a freshman from Hawaii, the 6-1, 5-7, 10-8 win at No. 6 singles was his first as a Gael.
Arizona enters with a 3-0 record, having defeated New Mexico State 4-2 last Saturday for its last win. The match did not include doubles, due to rain. Arizona also owns wins over Northern Arizona and Nevada this spring.
The Wildcats are led at No. 1 singles by Andre Vidaller, a junior from Santos, Brazil. He'll be looking to bounce back after dropping his match Saturday in straight sets.
Saint Mary's will play San Francisco at the Olympic Club on Feb. 6 at noon before returning to Korth Tennis Complex to host Pacific on Feb. 10. That match is also scheduled for a noon start.
