SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- A split at last weekend's ITA Kick-Off Weekend earned the Saint Mary's women's tennis team a small bump in the ITA national rankings.
This weekend, the No. 40-ranked Gaels will be tested again as they head to San Diego to play No. 44 Washington on Saturday at noon. On Sunday, Saint Mary's will wrap up the trip by playing host San Diego State at 11 a.m.
Saint Mary's (1-1) got off to a good start last weekend in Berkeley, beating UNLV 5-2 to advance to the championship against No. 7 Cal. The Bears won the championship match the next day, advancing to the ITA National Indoor Championships.
Leading the way so far this season for Saint Mary's has been No. 1 singles player Jenny Jullien. The native of Perpignan, France is 3-1 in the spring, and all three wins have come over opponents ranked in the top 30 nationally. Jullien is currently ranked No. 64 in the country.
Also off to a good start is No. 3 singles player Danielle Flores. A sophomore transfer from Utah, the San Diego native will return home this weekend carrying a 2-2 singles record in the spring.
Washington enters Friday's dual match with San Diego State with a 4-1 record, having lost to No. 2 UCLA in its last match.
The Huskies are led at the top of the lineup by Grace Isidora. Only a freshman, the native of Indonesia is ranked No. 107 nationally. Ysidora is 3-2 in dual matches this season.
San Diego State enters at 2-0 on the early season, having defeated both Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside on Jan. 19.
Senior Julia Wais leads the Aztecs at the top of the singles lineup, and the native of Germany is 2-0 in dual matches so far this season. In four sets this spring, she has only dropped eight games.
Wais will also likely line up at the top of the doubles lineup, teaming with Michaela Casanova. The pair is 2-0 so far this season.
Saint Mary's begins West Coast Conference play next week with road matches at Portland and Gonzaga. The Gaels will make their home debut on Feb. 10 when they host Cal Poly at 11 a.m.
