OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Saint Mary's guard Matthew Dellavedova was named Wednesday as one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award, an honor given to student-athletes who display excellence in four areas -- community, classroom, character and competition.
Dellavedova carries a 3.4 GPA and majors in psychology. Last season, he became the first Saint Mary's player ever selected to the Capital One Academic All-America ® Men's Basketball Team.
He was recently chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District ® Men's Basketball Team. Dellavedova is a two-time all-West Coast Conference Academic selection, and is the reigning WCC Player of the Year.
The native of Maryborough, Victoria, Australia is also active in the community, participating in the Gaels' annual Special Olympics clinic and organizing the team's participation in the international Movember movement to raise awareness for cancer research.
Finalists for the Senior CLASS (an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School) Award were chosen by a media committee from a list of 30 candidates announced in October. The winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Final Four ® in Atlanta, GA April 6 and 8.
Nationwide fan voting begins immediately through either the CLASS award website (www.seniorclassaward.com) or through the award's Facebook page (www.facebook.com/seniorclassaward). Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches' votes to determine the winner.
