PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Saint Mary's women's tennis team got West Coast Conference play started on a good note Wednesday, earning a 5-2 victory over host Portland.
Saint Mary's (2-3, 1-0 WCC) earned the first point of the match with a pair of doubles victories. Jenny Jullien and Danielle Flores picked up an 8-4 win at No. 1, while Jade Frampton and Audrey Leitz had no trouble in claiming an 8-1 win at No. 3.
Singles proved just as successful for the Gaels. At No. 1, Jullien dropped the first set 4-6 to freshman Maja Mladenovic, but that didn't stop the junior from France as she stormed back to win the next two sets 6-0, 6-3 and improve to 6-1 on the young season.
Catherine Isip had a great day for the Gaels at No. 2 singles, picking up her second win of the spring with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Sabine Fuchs.
Flores cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3, while Leitz had no trouble with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6. The Pilots got wins at No. 4 and 5 singles to round out the scoring.
There won't be much time to rest for Saint Mary's, as the Gaels left Portland on Wednesday and headed to Spokane, Wash. for Thursday's 11 a.m. match against Gonzaga.
Local fans will get their first chance to see this year's Gaels on Sunday when they host Cal Poly at 11 a.m.
