WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- The Saint Mary's Cross Country and Track programs hosted their second annual Alumni Social event at Pyramid Brewery in Walnut Creek on Thursday, renewing an event created last year by the coaching staff to begin strengthening the bond between alumni and the current team.
This year's event was highlighted by a new fundraising goal for the team to purchase an Alter-G treadmill, a technologically advanced machine that will greatly enhance training opportunities for Gael runners.
"Our alumni support continues to expand and last night's event was confirmation that our former Gaels really care about the college and the team's goals," said head coach Marty Kinsey. "Our coaching staff put together a great event where our alumni can relax, socialize, catch up, re-live some glory days and focus on the future of our program."
Over 20 alumni, family and friends attended the gathering. Brad Alban ('11) was named as the program's Alumni of the Year, recognizing the former team captain for his support of the XC/Track programs, his LaSallian lifestyle and his progress in helping push the sport in a positive direction.
"Brad has been a tremendous help for us with practice,' said associate head coach Mark Carberry. "Travelling to meets in state and out of state to support the teams, he led by example. It is fitting he is the first recipient of this new award."
The Gaels took in almost $1,400 in donations to push forward the Alter-G fundraising project. Also in attendance was assistant coach Karrie Hagedorn, who said "It was a big success and I'm so happy to be a part of this program. The support continues to grow and we look forward to more events in the future!"
The Gaels were able to cap off the event by watching the Men's Basketball team face Santa Clara for the conclusion of their event.
