HONOLULU, Hawai'i -- The Saint Mary's softball team finished play at the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic on Saturday with a 7-2 setback against Ole Miss.
Saint Mary's (0-5) led for the first time in the tournament, scoring once in the top of the first and once in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead.
Freshman Erica Musgrave keyed the early offense. In the first, she gave the Gaels their first baserunner when she was hit by a pitch with one out. She advanced to second on a walk to Katelyn Mamizuka, and scored when Sarah Lira singled to center field.
Pinch-runner Lahela Usui, a Honolulu native, was retired at third on a fielder's choice, leaving Musgrave up with runners on first and second and two outs. The freshman from Lodi, Calif. came through, singling to to right to score Reichhardt.
Ole Miss (2-3) cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the second, then tied it with a run in the bottom of the fourth. The Rebels exploded for five in the fifth taking the lead for good.
Next up for Saint Mary's is next Saturday's home opener against Sacramento State. First pitch for the twin bill is set for noon.
